We are pleased to announce Rhoda Green as our 2020 REEF Volunteer of the Year. Rhoda lives in the Seattle area, and has been a REEF member since 2000. She is one of REEF's most active surveyors, having completed 1,210 surveys for the Volunteer Fish Survey Project.

Of those surveys, the majority have been done in the Pacific Northwest, mainly in Washington State. She has also done some surveys in Hawaii. Rhoda was also the first to conduct REEF surveys in the Seychelles, part of our Indian Ocean/Red Sea (IORS) region.

This year, as part of the Volunteer Fish Survey Project, join in the Super Surveyor Challenge! Everyone who conducts and submits 25 surveys during the calendar year will receive a limited-edition decal and be entered into the grand prize drawing at the end of the year.

Here's how to complete the Super Surveyor Challenge:

With a new year about to begin, we've put together a full schedule of online programs for you to look forward to. We'll continue to offer our Fishinars, which are free marine life ID webinars. We have also added a variety of other online programs including Fishy Hour Game Nights, Fish Face-to-Face socials, quarterly Into the Blue Book Club meetings, an annual holiday craft, and more. Sessions are hosted on either GoToWebinar or Zoom, and all details are avilable on each online program registration page.

Upcoming Online Programs:

Welcome to the Citizen Science Corner, our quarterly feature to acknowledge those who recently reached a milestone in our Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Below are the REEF members who achieved a survey milestone in July, August, or September 2020.

Experience Level Advancements

REEF Experience Levels are a way for divers and snorkelers to measure their fish ID knowledge along with their surveying experience. From brand new beginners up to the top (Level 5), you'll find plenty of resources and friends to help you along the way.

When a REEF volunteer surveyor submits 1,000 surveys, he or she becomes a member of the Golden Hamlet Club. We are very pleased to welcome Judith Cucco as the newest Golden Hamlet Club member! Every one of Judith's 1,000 REEF surveys were conducted while snorkeling in Hawaii, where she lives on O'ahu and is in the water almost every day. Judith has been a REEF member for over 10 years, and is an expert level 5 surveyor in the Hawaii (HAW) survey region.

Welcome to the Citizen Science Corner, a new feature highlighting those who recently reached a milestone in our Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Each quarter, we'll feature our surveyors' achievements from the past several months.

Experience Level Advancements

Dive into the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest with REEF in the SeaDoc Society's latest episode of Salish Sea Wild, The Natural History of the Fish Geek. The episode is a lighthearted take on SeaDoc's citizen science partnership with REEF to support the Volunteer Fish Survey Project.

Our next Fishinar will be a special one! On Tuesday, June 16, at 8pm EDT, Alli Candelmo, Ph.D., REEF Conservation Science Manager, will be giving an update on current research findings for the invasive lionfish problem in the Tropical Western Atlantic waters. Click here to register for this Fishinar - you can tune in using a laptop, tablet, or even a smartphone.

REEF Experience Levels are a way for divers and snorkelers to measure their fish ID knowledge along with their surveying experience. With 5 levels in each of REEF's survey regions, divers are able to look forward to the next step and continually improve their skills. From brand new beginners up to the top Level 5 experience level, you'll find plenty of resources and friends to help you along the way.

Let's hear it for these REEF members who have improved and moved up a level this month!
