- Conserving Marine Life: Through the Volunteer Fish Survey Project, REEF citizen scientists provided critical data to track ocean health across diverse ecosystems. This information directly supports scientists and policymakers in making conservation decisions.
- Managing Invasive Species: Your support allowed REEF to expand its Invasive Species Program, including lionfish removal efforts that protect native fish populations and habitats.
- Inspiring Ocean Stewards: From interactive field trips to virtual learning, our Ocean Explorers Education Program empowered young conservationists with hands-on marine science experiences.
- Safeguarding Endangered Species: In partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment, Grouper Moon Project efforts continue to study Nassau Grouper populations.
By the Numbers: 2024 Highlights
- 10,600+ marine life surveys submitted to the Volunteer Fish Survey Project (VFSP) database in 2024, resulting in more than 305,000 surveys in the database conducted by over 17,000 volunteer citizen scientists since 1993
- 13 REEF Field Survey Trips hosted to collect marine life data at destinations worldwide, including Grenada, Galapagos Islands, Utila, Raja Ampat-Indonesia, St. Lucia, Cuba, Bonaire, Tobago, Malta, Grand Cayman, Dominica, Lembeh Strait-Indonesia, and Cozumel.
- 134 published scientific papers (to date) using REEF data, including a 2024 study on Hammerhead Sharks
- 9,000+ Nassau Grouper recorded during the 2024 field season of the Grouper Moon Project, representing a major success for species recovery
- 1,527 invasive lionfish removed from Florida waters during the 2024 Florida Keys Lionfish Derby & Festival
- 11 Fishinars and online programs taught or hosted in 2024, including marine life ID webinars, Oceans for All marine science panel discussion, and Into the Blue Book Club virtual meetings, with more than 200 free educational marine life webinars available in REEF archives
- 12 Marine Education & Conservation Interns and 3 Marine Conservation Fellows hosted
- 23 education sessions provided at no cost to participants, with support from the Oceans for All Fund
- 162 162 educational events including Discovery Programs, Expeditions, Virtual Field Trips, Virtual Case Studies, a seminar series, classroom visits, workshops, and Conservation Partner events.
- 22 online programs for students in grades 3-12, including Virtual Field Trips and Virtual Case Studies
- More than 5,400 individuals engaged through REEF Ocean Explorers Education Programs, from elementary school students to senior citizens
- 85,000+ REEF members worldwide
- More than 500 participants from 33 US states and 5 countries joined in the 5th Annual REEF Fish Out of Water Virtual 5K in support of ocean conservation

Grouper Moon 2024: Conservation Success in the Cayman Islands Continues
A summary of our annual field season for the Grouper Moon Project, a highly successful conservation science collaboration between REEF and the Cayman Islands Department of Environment to study one of the largest and last known spawning aggregations of endangered Nassau Grouper in the Caribbean.

In the coming year, we aim to increase engagement in our education and citizen science programs, advance our conservation science and research initiatives, and connect even more people to the ocean.
We are also very excited to open the brand new REEF Ocean Exploration Center for Marine Conservation at the REEF Campus in Key Largo this World Ocean Day, June 7-8, 2025! This state-of-the-art facility will transform the REEF Campus into a dynamic hub for marine conservation, featuring interactive exhibits, hands-on science experiences, and expanded community programming to engage visitors of all ages.
