Submerged Heritage Monitoring Scouts Workshop
To kick off the Citizen Science Saturday Series, REEF is partnering with Hertiage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida), a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk, particularly those impacted by erosion and sea level rise.
Florida has over 16,000 archaeological sites at risk for damage. Learn to protect our underwater heritage with NOAA and the Florida Public Archaeology Network in this program.
Hurricane Irma damaged numerous submerged archaeological sites in 2017, leaving archaeologist scrambling to document them. This year, join the Florida Public Archaeology Network and REEF for a day long workshop to learn how you can help record environmental impacts to FLorida's underwater sites. This engaging workshop consists of a morning in the classroom with FPAN staff at REEF's Interpretive center learning more about the area's history, as well as how archaeologists document changes to sites. This is followed by an afternoon practicial dive session at the City of Washington using the skills you learned to photograph and document the site. Volunteers for the program have documented over 20 sites already in the Florida Keys, but we need your help!
* If you have your own camera that you wish to use, please bring it for the diving portion of the program*
