REEF is proud two share two case studies, designed and developed by marine science professors in collaboration with REEF staff and Undergraduate Student Experiences with Citizen Science (USE CitSci) . Both provide great opportunities to examine REEF data in a classroom, supporting skills in analyzing data and using computational thinking in a structured way. These can be easily modified for advanced high school classes, or used in survey classes focusing on the power of citizen science and data.
Exploring Trends in Rainbow Parrotfish Abundance Using the REEF Database
Author: Amy Jean Horner Reber, Ph.D., Georgia State University
Summary: This activity uses REEF data to examine parrotfish population trends. Students practice data management and visualization, develop research questions and critically evaluate citizen science methods. Data interpretation, critical thinking, and communication skills are emphasized.
Florida Goliath Grouper Fishery Case Study
Author: Austin D. Heil, Ph.D., University of Georgia
Summary: Three-day case study designed for a non-major biology course. Students learn about goliath groupers, use REEF citizen science data and explore stakeholder input during active learning lectures. Low and high-stakes assignments are used to assess learning.
