Fish Movement Videos

Click on the Movie Download links below to view a video summarizing the travels that each tagged fish made while tagged. The movies depict the movement of tagged fish (shown as yellow dots on the map) between hydrophones.

Each time the movie updates, it summarizes:

a) which hydrophone heard the fish on the date shown,

b) how many times the hydrophone subsequently heard the fish, and

c) over how may days the hydrophone heard the fish.

Note also that the bottom right portion of the movie frame depicts the moon phase for the date the fish was first heard at the hydrophone.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE VIDEOS: The Flash movie files will work best for most browsers. If you do not have a Flash Player installed you can download it online. To view the Media Player videos, you will need to download and install the codec TSCC.exe.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on Bloody Bay wall. Only went in Jan 2005, then sat on a vr2 on its home site until 2006 spawning season. Went in both Jan and Feb 2006 to the West end SPAG.  Between the Jan and Feb 2006 spawning periods the fish bounces around on the West end quite a bit, and also visits the east end of the Island. Around the new moon the fish spends about 3 days on the west end SPAG.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on Bloody Bay wall. Went to the west end SPAG in both Jan and Feb 2005 and 2006. Like others, this fish migrates to the SPAG a few days after the full moon in Feb 2005.  This fish doesn’t bounce around all that much between Jan and Feb 2006, but does go back and forth up until the new moon, when it heads back to the home site and stays until Feb spawning period.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on the southwest end of the Island (~1-2km away from west end SPAG site). Went to the west end SPAG in Jan and Feb of both 2005 and 2006. In between it sat on the VR2 near its home site the whole time. Like others, this fish went to the SPAG AFTER the full moon in Feb 2005. Unlike many of the other fish, this one doesn't explore the island between Jan and Feb 2006 spawning periods, although it does bounce to and from the west end SPAG during this time, up until the new moon when it stays at its home site until the Feb spawning period.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on Bloody Bay wall, mostly out of vr2 range during the year. Heard during spawning season in Jan, Feb, and Mar 2005, and went in Jan and Feb of 2006. Lots of bouncing between home site and the SPAG during winter months. This fish (like others) migrated to the Feb 2005 SPAG a few days AFTER the full moon in Feb.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on the southeast end, goes to the west end SPAG in Jan and Feb 2005, and Jan, Feb AND MARCH 2006 (I think this is the only tagged fish that goes in March 2006). The fish uses the same route along the south of LC. In Jan 2006 the fish goes to the SPAG site and stays for 17 days, then leaves to bounce all along the south side of the Island, including up to the east end SPAG site.  This fish covers a lot of ground during the 2006 spawning periods.

Both spawning moons the fish spends the first few days at the east end before going to the west end SPAG for the remainder of the spawning period. INTERESTING!!!

But, like other fish, it bounces around and returns to the spawning site multiple times between Jan and Feb 2006 spawning periods. Like other fish, this fish bounced around  between Jan and Feb 2006, and went to the spawning site briefly between the Jan and Feb spawning periods. Most fish that had this behavior ended up going back to their home reef for a period of 4-9 days (just after the new moon) before the full moon in February.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives on Bloody Bay wall.  Goes Jan and Feb 2005, and Jan and Feb 2006. Like others, this fish bounces around between Jan and Feb 2006, and actually stays on the SPAG site for a few days during the new moon. A few things I thought about while watching this: 1) it seems that in 2005, fish generally went home and stayed home in between spawning periods Jan and Feb. Perhaps this was because there was actually spawning in Jan in 2005, whereas in 2006 Jan didn't have any spawning, so fish are more nervous about missing the big show? 2) In Feb 2006 fish tended to show up shortly AFTER the full moon, but during 2006 fish showed up shortly before the moons in both Jan and Feb. Again, is this related to the fact that spawning happened in Jan 2005? 3) Basically all the fish that are alive in 2006 go in both Jan and Feb, whereas in 2005 several fish only went in Jan. This must be related to the fact that Jan had spawning in 2005.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Lives near the SPAG site, on the north side. Goes to the SPAG in Jan and Feb in 2005 and 2006. Again, I noticed that this fish, like others, went to the SPAG site shortly AFTER the full moon in Feb 2005. Why did they do this? Between the 2005 and 2006 spawning seasons the fish sits on its home site and is heard regularly by the hydrophone. In Oct 2006 the fish begins to bounce around the Western half of the island for almost a month and is last heard on its old home site toward the end of October. Did we witness the it's last ditch efforts to find food (bouncing around) before returning to its home to pass on? Or did it simply relocate away from the hydrophone? Interesting.

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. This fish lives on the south eastern side of the island. In 2005 this fish goes to the spawning aggregation in Jan, Feb, March and April, although the April visit is only 2 days and happens closer to the new moon at the end of April. After this it sits on its home sit until Jan 2006 spawning period. This fish goes to the SPAG in Jan, then after 8 days returns to its home site and then turns right around on the same day and heads back to the SPAG. It subsequently stays for only a day before heading back to the home site prior to the new moon. Many of these fish exhibit this behavior: leaving the SPAG at the tail end of the Jan 2006 spawning period, going all the way back to their home reef and then turning around and going back to the SPAG for a short while. Why?

Tagged during Jan 2005 SPAG. Stays on the SPAG for7 days after being tagged, then heads east along the northern shelf edge before disappearing around Bloody Bay wall. The fish is heard 4 times during the Jan 2006 SPAG, and not once in the February 2006 SPAG, which is odd if the assumption that these hits during the Jan 2006 SPAG are spurious. On the other hand, there are no hits suggesting migration to or from the SPAG site in Jan 2006. Hard to know how to interpret this, but I believe these hits in Jan 2006 were the result of a particular tag combination that existing during that spawning period which was particularly good for code collisions that yielded 3923. Hmmm.
