The Ocean Exploration Center is a cornerstone for marine conservation and education, bringing together science, art, and history to inspire and engage visitors of all ages. This brand new facility features interactive exhibits, inspiring programs, and opportunities to learn about the wonders of the underwater world.

Morning Exploration
Start your day by exploring the natural beauty of the Florida Keys! Whether you prefer snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or paddleboarding, there’s no shortage of adventures to enjoy. Please make your own arrangements by contacting the vendors directly. REEF has not pre-booked any excursions. See the "Florida Keys Adventures" section below
3:00 – 7:00 PM: Grand Opening Celebration
• Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Be there for the moment the Ocean Exploration Center officially opens its doors. Celebrate this milestone for marine conservation and education!
• Opening Remarks and Special Announcements: Hear from REEF leaders, our co-Founder Ned DeLoach, and other special guests about what makes this space truly transformative for our oceans and communities.
• Official Opening: Explore the incredible features of the Center, at your own pace or one of the guided tours offered throughout the day.
The celebration continues throughout the afternoon with hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations for all ages. Don’t miss:
• Lionfish Adventures: Learn about the invasive lionfish species and the impact it has on marine ecosystems. This interactive experience includes a live dissection demonstration, a chance to taste this delicious fish, and expert tips on how you can help mitigate the invasion.
• Microscope Marvels: Dive into the microscopic world of marine life with engaging, up-close views of coral polyps, plankton, and more using state-of-the-art equipment. Perfect for curious minds of all ages!
• Dry Fish Survey and Scavenger Hunt: Experience a dry version of the REEF Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Test your fish identification skills and see how many of the more than 100 species featured in the Center you can spot. Prizes and bragging rights are on the line!

Whether you’re an experienced runner or prefer a leisurely stroll, bike ride, or skate, this is a family-friendly event for all. The route follows the picturesque Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, starting and ending at the Center. Registered participants receive limited-edition gear, including a race shirt and custom fish-themed stickers. Even if you don’t register, join us for the fun and the post-run celebration with coffee and breakfast food trucks! This will be REEF’s sixth annual Fish Out of Water 5K event, but the first time an in-person gathering has been added as an option to this traditionally virtual event. Registration opens on April 1. All proceeds benefit REEF’s Ocean for All Fund. For more information, visit www.REEF.org/5K.

After the official Grand Opening event concludes on Sunday, we encourage you to extend your stay and join us for a special edition of our monthly Fish & Friends seminar series, with an inspiring presentation by REEF Co-Founder Ned DeLoach. • Snorkeling and Diving: Discover vibrant coral reefs and colorful marine life beneath the surface.
• Kayaking and Paddleboarding: Glide through serene mangrove trails and enjoy the stunning coastal views.
• Nature Trails and Parks: Explore the unique ecosystems of the Keys, from coral reefs to tropical hammocks.
• Wildlife Watching: Spot native birds, marine life, and other wildlife in their natural habitats.
• Cultural and Historical Experiences: Learn about the rich history and culture of the Keys through museums and local attractions.
Plan your excursions in advance to make the most of your stay. Please arrange any reservations directly with the operator. REEF is not coordinating bookings or chartering boats as part of the Grand Opening.

These tours give you advance notice of scenic, iconic, or historic points of interest as you drive along the Overseas Highway, Florida’s only designated All-American Road. Launch the Northbound or Southbound Driving Tour in the App to learn fun facts, uncover new spots and safely drive the beautiful Florida Keys.
Travel Info and FAQs
How do I get to Key Largo?
If you are flying, the closest airport is Miami International Airport (MIA - 63 miles to REEF Campus). Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL - 91 miles to REEF Campus) and Palm Beach International Airport (PBI - 133 miles to REEF Campus) are also options. There is not much in the way of public transportation or ride share services in Key Largo, so a rental car is recommended.
Where should I stay?
We do not have room blocks or partner hotels for the Grand Opening. There are many lodging options in the area, from big hotels to sailboat stays! To find the right place for you, we recommend checking out listings and reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, Airbnb, or VRBO. Locations in the Florida Keys are generally noted by mile marker (MM) along Highway 1. The REEF Campus, including the Ocean Exploration Center, is located at MM 98.8.
Is the event free?
Yes! The Ocean Exploration Center is free and open to the public.
Can I bring my family?
Absolutely - activities are perfect for all ages.
For safety and comfort, please leave pets at home. Service animals are welcome.
What about accessibility?
The Ocean Exploration Center is ADA accessible and access to the 2nd floor is by electronic lift.
